Natural confidence

Traditional still life uses fruit as its subject, so I started with a pineapple. This is my self portrait still life. I drew 3 of my necklaces that mean something to me. The one in the middle its a little drill which meens that I can go through anything. The one on the left its an akaoni voudou doll that is for acomplishing all my goals, and the one on the right hand is an animal´s paw that represents my love for animals. At the top of the pineapple, there is a paintbrush that I brought from Japan that symbolizes my love for art.

  1. This came out so well! I love all the details of the pineapple! My favorite part of this picture is the leaves(or whatever that spikey stuff on top is calle)! I also like the way you set up the objects- it was a really creative idea having everything hang off of the pineapple. The perspective you used is interesting. Were you drawing looking up at the pineapple? I just noticed that it's the same height as the window. You did a really nice job on all the shading on everything too. I like ur voudou doll necklace. I haven't seen any of those around in ct before.

  2. I agree with Mandi, I think the way you set up your still life is very creative - having objects hanging from or stick into the pineapple. I also enjoy your play on traditional still lives by having the pineapple in the drawing, adding an element that plays off of art history shows your awareness of it. Additionally, your inclusion of the background gives the drawing a sense of space and I'm really happy you included it. With that being said, I wish that the values of the paint brush and the background on the left side of the drawing were not as close as they are. Right now it is a little hard to see the paintbrush. So remember, that you as the artist can adjust things, values, the still life itself, etc, to make it a more successful drawing. It would be nice if the paintbrush popped out from the background, instead of fading into it as it is right now.

Throughout the drawing you have nice contrast, which is great to see, however the light source is a bit confusing. The body of the pineapple is very light on the right side, however that is also where the cast shadow is falling. It would make more sense if the shadow was falling under the darker side of the fruit. Did you have a strong light source on one side? Similarly, in the future, think about how you want to show the light source throughout the piece. On the top of the pineapple the shading and values are pretty much the same, so once again the light source is not completely clear.

I would definitely recommend more still lives. The more you do them, the more comfortable you will become with them and colleges like to see them in portfolios. How did you like drawing this? Did you enjoy drawing from observation? Did you struggle with a particular part?
