Self-Portrait

A picture was taken of me and I used that as a guide to do this charcoal self-portrait. The thing that characterizes this drawing is the reality of the image (I think it looks pretty real), plus a good use of perspective. And in case you wonder what am I holding, its a Kendo sword.

  1. I agree that this is a great use of perspective and foreshortening. It's also nice to see that you included something personal about yourself in your portrait (I assume the sword is yours and of interest to you). You mentioned that you used the photo to guide your portrait. Did you use a mirror as well? I would maybe like to see a little bit more detail in your face, just like the detail in the handle of the sword. Also, I think the image would be stronger if the sword didn't go off the page. It stops the momentum of the drawing... although that could just be the photo? Great contrast in the piece and use of charcoal I would definitely encourage to keep using it.

  2. No I did not used any mirrors just the picture, and yes the sword its something of my interest so i decided to use it as the foreshortening and i tried to skip a little more the face because I was too far away from the camera so I couldn't notes to much of details so I focus more on the sword than the actual body. I was also thinking on using charcoal for module 2 and probably for module 4 as well.

  3. Great! I'm glad to hear I will see some more charcoal work of yours. Keep the contrast up as well as the mid-tones. At some point you might want to think about doing a self-portrait by looking in the mirror. The first few times can be hard and frustrating but it's worth persevering!! A lot of schools as for a self-portrait in their portfolio guidelines.
